Before you begin
The Money Conversation, Before the Nikah
Editorial team · 14 October 2025 · 6 min read
Money is one of the least discussed and most decisive parts of getting married. A promising match will often slow to a halt because neither side wanted to raise it early, and by the time it comes up there is already disappointment attached.
For brothers
You do not have to be wealthy. You do need a realistic plan for maintenance: somewhere to live, a stable income, and no debt you are keeping quiet about. Being straight about your situation in the first few conversations saves everyone months.
For sisters
Know the standard of living you actually expect, and whether it matches the brothers you are speaking to. Clarity here is a kindness. If you intend to keep working, or to stop, say so early.
The mahr
The mahr is the wife's right and should be something the husband can genuinely give, not a figure chosen to impress. A reasonable mahr paid in full is worth far more than a large one deferred with no real date.
Talking about money before the nikah is not unromantic. It is one of the clearest signs that both people are taking the marriage seriously.
